2006 Temiskaming Nordic Valentine Loppet - Updated
Monday, 13 February 2006

Image The Temiskaming Nordic Ski Club hosted their annual Valentine’s Day Loppet Sunday on their trail system just south of New Liskeard. The races were 2 km or 5 km for the younger folk and 10 km or 20 km classic for “older” skiers. The trails were in perfect shape thanks to great grooming efforts and plenty of snow. The trails at TNSC are a lot of fun to ski. The 20 k loop starts out on very flat terrain for the first 7 km or so. However, the trail then moves into more gradual climbs and with 5 km to go into very rolling steep hills where the loops are aptly named things like roller coaster and carousel. Updated with a report by NBNRT Member Carol Farintosh. Read on…

Many skiers from the North Bay Nordic Ski Club took part in the races. NBNRT member Andrew Rees  placed first overall in the 20 k with a time of 1:11:11, Dave Weiskopf, placed second overall with a time of 1:13:42, and Stephanie Rees was the first female overall with a time of 1:25:40.

Here is a report by NBNRT Member Carol Farintosh:

As past members of the Temiskaming Nordic Ski Club, we love getting back there to ski and see old friends.  Their loppet is always an exceptional event and at the amazing price of $20  a family you can't beat it. Having done the 20km in 2004, I had remembered going out too fast (an easy thing to do as the first part is relatively flat) and having nothing left by the time I got to the last 5km of major climbing and feeling gross so I was determined to do things differently this time.  I was pleased with my time of 1:41:23 for the 20km (1st for my age category) and although I probably should have passed some people sooner (I usually ski behind people till they get tired of my chit chat and THEY get out of the way just to be rid of me), I enjoyed every minute of my ski.  It was also really wonderful to see so many women entered in the 20km event (seven including another NBNSC member April Peterson). Way to go women!!  Now if I can just get some hill skills so that I can do that stupid carousel loop without falling!!

Don also bravely entered the 20km for the first time, despite not having skiied much this season. He came in with a time of 1:53:50 and pleased that he could still manage to walk erect the next day.

Our offspring did great with three first place finishes: Brent (15) doing the 10k classic in 38:07, Stuart(10) doing the 5k skate in 24:09 and Ian (10)doing the 5k classic in 30:08.

A wonderful time was had by all and we hope to do it again next year and improve our times.  Word has it they might be offering a 10 and 20 km skate option next year so maybe we'll get the whole Wild Wednesday contingent up there in 2007!  They truly are beautiful trails.
