Well, here I am out west to train and race. Unfortunately the weather hasn’t been the most cooperative. Last week I was at Kananaskis Lodge for work (conference) and to get some skiing in. Similar to last time I was here to ski (March 05) there had just been a major melt-down. Temperatures in Calgary were around 18 degrees!! There was some skiing to be had (as in March) but it was on un-tracked backcountry trails. That did make for some fun skiing as weather was great, not ideal for getting in the km’s… Since the weekend I have been in Canmore, site of the upcoming Noram Races (Dec 3, 4) and World Cup Events (Dec 15-18). Until the other day there wasn’t a hint of snow. Now there is about 10 cm on the ground, the temperatures have dropped to -20 C, and they’ve been making a ton of snow at the Nordic Center. Luckily there have been great groomed tracks on Moraine Lake Road and Hwy 1A at Lake Louise (2 hrs of driving from here). I’ve been able to make it out there to ski a couple times. However, as I type the trails are getting worked into shape at the Nordic Center. It looks like the races are a go this weekend (although the courses aren’t open yet). Should be interesting… From Canmore AB – Andrew Rees
