2006 Bluesky Loppet - Forget Own the Podium 2010 - We are the podium NOW
Sunday, 26 February 2006

ImageWell, the first annual Bluesky Loppet weekend is in the books. The odd hiccup aside, the two day event will certainly be remembered as a roaring success! Including the enthusiastic Jackrabbit skiers a total of 57 skiers took part in Saturday’s skating races, while 105 racers braved the cold for Sunday’s classic races. Read On!

Sunny skies and moderate temperatures (- 10C) made for good, but not overly fast, racing conditions on Saturday. The performances put in by NBNRT members were inspirational to say the least. Dave Weiskopf won the 9 km skate overall with a competition crushing time of 31:44. Winning his category and placing 5th overall was Todd Gleason with a time of 39:41. Erin Fettes put in a great ski and was the fastest women overall in the 9km with a time of 41:09. Also putting in great 9km performances were Don Farintosh (2nd 36-49 category) with a time of 42:26 and Kevin Stoppa (3rd 36-49) with a time of 52:34. Andrew Rees won the overall18 km skate with a time of 1:02:59 (31:12, 31:47), while Stephanie Rees posted the fastest women’s time of 1:13:45 (36:17, 37:28). Aaron Duquette placed 5th in the very tough men’s 20-35 category with a time of 1:13:02 (34:51, 38:11). Carol Farintosh was the second women overall (winning the 36 to 49 category) with a time of 1:21:09 (40:11, 40:58), while Ed Mccolm won the men’s 36-49 category in a time of 1:10:50 (34:50, 36:00), and Jan Vandermeer placed second in the men’s 50 and over category with a time of 1:13:58 (36:43, 37:15).

Sunday morning the skiers were greeted by early morning temperatures around -25C. Luckily the temperature warmed slightly before race start. Conditions were still very cold and slow, however, for the brave few that took off onto the green trail. NBNRT performances were again inspirational! Dave Weiskopf won the 18km (1 lap) in convincing fashion with a time of 1:03:13. Carol Farintosh was the fastest women in the 18km with the time of 1:33:34; while Don Farintosh raced to a 4th place finish in the men’s 36-49 category with a time of 1:37:59. Jan Vandermeer raced to a 2nd place finish in the men’s 50+ category with a time of 1:23:05, while Dave Minden placed 3rd with a time of 1:25:57. In the 36 km Andrew Rees was second overall with a time of 2:12:32 (1:04:44, 1:07:48), while Stephanie Rees was the first overall woman with a time of 2:50:01 (1:21:51, 1:28:10). Andrew and Stephanie also won the overall combined long distance prize.
