ImageLast weekend were the final OUAA University races of this season. They took place in Sudbury under very cold conditions. The races were held at the Laurentian University ski trails. They had just received as much as 35+cm a few days before the events but the groomers were able to transform all that snow into great trail conditions. Read On...

On Saturday there was a 12k classic and 3 x 4.5 km team relays. Saturday morning the racers awoke to a welcome -27 degrees. The start was delayed until 11am so that the temperatures could reach a more bearable -20. The limit for races is -20 and things got underway when the temperature supposedly reached a warm -19. The snow temperature remained at -21 and, as a result, the glide wasn’t the best!! Despite feeling strong technically I found it difficult to breathe hard and floundered to an 18th place finish (of 49 starters). The relay was later in the afternoon and unfortunately the temperature hadn’t warmed up much. The wind did pick up though and it was very cold standing around waiting for the start. I started for our team (University of Waterloo) and didn’t ski nearly as well as I’d hoped. I tagged off in 7th place, close behind 5th and 6th. Luckily we had our two strongest skiers next and they cruised to a 4th place finish behind Lakehead A, B and Carlton A. Sunday’s skate race didn’t go much better despite the temperature rising to -17. I struggled to find a good pace early and had some lingering lung pain from Saturday’s efforts that made breathing again a bit difficult. I haven’t been very pleased with my skating this year and Sunday’s race was no exception. Not to worry though, there will be plenty more races to enter, this isn’t my last trip to the OUAA finals either. I’ve been pleased with the progress I’ve made since December this season. I’m already looking forward to putting in some better hours and more focused training this summer and fall. Full results and pics at http://www.laurentiannordic.com
